The Spokane Sounders are proud to welcome back Cam Bushey to the family as a member of the club’s coaching staff heading into the 2023-24 season. The current Whitworth Women’s Head Coach returns to the fold after spending several years focusing on his collegiate coaching career.

More than an alumnus of the club, Bushey grew up in the club – which began with his father Sean serving as the men’s PDL coach and later technical director as it expanded to include a youth program in the 1990s – and later became a successful coach for the Shadow / Spokane Sounders whilst attending and playing for Whitworth.

“I grew up in Spokane and care a lot about the soccer community here,” said Bushey. “After discussions with Abbas (Faridnia) and Kevin (Moon), I am so happy to be working with the club again and to be a part of creating a great soccer experience for girls in our community. I want to thank Abbas and Kevin for the opportunity. I believe in what the club provides for these players. We will have a lot of fun and play really good soccer.”

Though his coaching assignments will be announced prior to the 2023-24 Tryouts coming up in May, Bushey’s history in the club has seen him primarily coaching U14-U16 age groups. He began in 2010 with U15 Girls and added the younger age group to that the following year. When he returned from the Rush, he took on the U13 and U14 boys in 2015 and the following year added the U12 North and U15 Girls. Prior to departing to join the Gonzaga men’s staff, he coached both U16 Girls sides and the U19 Boys.

“I am thrilled to have Cam back in the family,” said Technical Director Abbas Faridnia. “Cam brings a vast depth of experience and knowledge combined with a youthful exuberance that will help us continue to inspire the young ladies in our program to reach new heights as we aim to move from one of the region’s top girl’s programs representing in the Girls Academy Champions Cup to being routinely competitive with the nation’s elite.”

Following his playing career with the club, Bushey went on to join his father’s program at Whitworth. As a player for the Pirates, he was a successful and accomplished athlete, earning All-NWC honors all four years and guiding the team through one of its most prolific periods, claiming three league titles and a pair of NCAA DIII tournament appearances.

With the exception of a three-year stint with Colorado Rush (2012-2015), Bushey would coach in the club, managing boys and girls sides, from 2009 until he joined the Gonzaga Men’s staff in 2018. His tenure also included one season as the Men’s First Team head coach in 2017.

Following two seasons as an assistant with GU, Bushey was named top assistant coach at Stanislaus State in 2020. He returned home to Spokane in 2022 to take over the Whitworth Women’s Soccer program.
