Tournament Round-Up: 8-17-22 Edition

Over the past few weeks several teams have ventured out of Spokane for some tournaments with the G10 RCL winning the Mt Hood Challenge while the B10 ECNL and G04/05 RCL reached the finals of the Snohomish Bigfoot Tournament along with the G06 at the Rainier Valley Classic.

Here’s a quick round-up of some highlights at travel tournaments…

Mt Hood Challenge

The G2010 RCL ladies romped through the group competition with three wins, allowing just one goal while utilizing three different goalkeepers as they racked up nine. Not bad for the group’s first games together. Plus, they also attended an MLS Timbers match. They faced Seattle Celtic in the championship and came away with a 4-1 victory for the title.

“This team played solid defense, which led to us having a very good counter-attack,” said coach Brett Wanner.

Snohomish Bigfoot Tournament

The B2010 ECNL squad went 2-1-0 in group play with wins over Lake WA Premier and Pac Northwest to reach the final, where they fell 4-2 to Washington Premier.

“We welcomed our new goalkeeper Henry Brown and he had an immediate impact, making some key saves to push us into the final against WPFC ECNL,” said coach John Palladino. “The team is coming together and working out the early season kinks, and having Henry in the box makes it a lot easier! It was a great experience for the boys to make a final in their second tournament ever as a group!”

Also advancing from their group with a pair of wins was B2011 South Rave. They finished first with wins over TC United and Pac Northwest after falling to Washington Premier in the opener. The team was on a scoring frenzy, tallying at least three goals in each game for a total of 17 in group and capping things off with Ryan Rojas and Noé Garcia combining for 9 of 10 goals in a 10-1 win against Pac Northwest. Their run would come to an end, though, in a 3-2 loss to Washington Premier in the semifinals.

“At the team’s first-ever tournament we were super proud of our boys,” said Palladino. “They each took turns in goal and worked great to out pass and play every team  we came up against. If it weren’t for the woodwork, our team would have easily slid into the finals!”

Also advancing to the Snohomish Bigfoot Final were the G2004/05 RCL ladies with a 2-0-1 record and no goals allowed. They opened a pair of 2-0 wins against Washington Premier and WFC Rangers before playing to a scoreless stalemate against Sound FC, who they edged out in the tiebreakers to advance to the final. Grace Martinson, Alex Miller, and Karlee Whitehead tallied in the run while Myann Johansen spearheaded the shutouts in goal. They squared off against host Snohomish United ECNL in the championship and came up short in a 1-0 contest.

“The girls played extremely well, keeping the other teams scoreless until an unfortunate second half penalty decided the outcome,” said coach Noah White.

The G07 RCL also did well at the event with a 2-1-0 record in group play, but were third in the group.

Rainier Valley Classic

The G06 RCL ladies controlled matters in group play, advancing with a 2-0-1 mark without allowing a goal with Izzy Morisette minding the net. Unfortunately, they fell in the final to host MRFC DPL, whom they tied earlier in a scoreless stalemate.

“It was a hard-fought match versus DPL opponent MRFC in the final,” said coach Noah White. “The girls look forward to their rematch in the DPL.”

Surf Cup

The B04/05 ECNL squad came back with heads high after a solid outing in San Diego. They went 2-1-0 in their group, kicking things off with a 2-0 win against Arizona Arsenal. They fell to eventual champion Oregon Premier in the second match, but rebounded with a 4-2 win against Pateadores in which Bryce Allred tallied a hat-trick to finish things off. He had four on the weekend with Zac Olson and Adrian Ferasse also finding the back of the net. Hudson Byrd and Tynan Silva were also standouts defensively for the group.

Harvest Cup

Hitting the pitch for a bit of fun in the small-sided event, the G08/09 Copa ladies split up to play in the tournament.

“It was great for this new squad to get out and play together for the first time, and the girls had fun,” said coach Ryan Schultz. “Sunday had both our teams match up against each other for the final round robin game for a 2-2 draw and then they played each other again in the consolation match with Team 1 winning 3-2.”
