Summer Tournament Success Continues

Spokane Sounders and Shadow success throughout the summer tournament calendar continued over the past few weeks with the Surf Cup, Rush Cup, Pleasanton Rage Showcase and River City Cup.

Surf Cup

The two-week event kicked off with the older teams making waves down in San Diego. The G2001 Rave ladies added yet another highlight to its current run, claiming the U18 Super Black championship to go with its recent State Cup and Crossfire Challenge titles. After finishing a perfect 3-0-0 in group, they down Hawaiian Rush and Surf teams 2-1 and 1-0, respectively, in the semifinals and final for the championship.

The B2002 Rave and G2000 Rave sides performed well with 2-1-0 records to finish second in their groups in the U17 Super White and U19 Super White brackets, respectively, as they narrowly missed out on the knockout stages. The following weekend the B2005 Rave side also picked up a pair of wins with a 2-2-0 mark to finish third in their five-team group in the U14 Black bracket.

Rush Cup

The west side tournament last week featured quite a few of the Sounders Shale sides kicking off their tournament slate, many of them advancing to the knockout stages. Claiming the championship at the event was the B2002 Shale side as they were 2-1-0 in the group and then won the title with a 1-0 victory in the U17 Gold Final.

Five other sides finished as finalists. B2001 Rave went 1-1-1 in the U19 Gold group phase but posted a big 3-0 semifinal victory to reach the final before falling 1-0. Also in a close 1-0 championship decision, B2006 Shale were finalists in the U13 Silver bracket with a 2-1-0 group performance and a 3-2 semifinal victory.

Also advancing to finals were B2008 South, who were 2-1-0 in group play; B2005 Shale, who won their group with a 2-1-0 record and advanced to the final with a 2-0 semifinal win; and B2003 Shale, group winners with a 2-0-1 mark followed by a 1-0 semifinal win.

Pleasanton Rage Showcase

A few of the Sounders sides returned to the Pleasanton Rage’s two-week event recently as well. G2003 Rave did well with a 2-1-1 record in the U16 Super bracket (VIDEO HIGHLIGHTS [+]) and G2004 Rave were 0-2-2 in U15 Super at the College Showcase the first weekend. G2005 Rave followed that up the second weekend with a 1-1-1 record in the U14 Premier bracket.

River City Cup

A few teams also took part in the local tourney with a pair of sides advancing to finals. B2007 Rave North claimed the U12 championship with a perfect 4-0-0 record in group and a 4-2 win over Eastern Washington Surf in the final. Select side Shadow United G2006 finished second in their group at 1-1-1 and narrowly fell in the final 2-1 while another Select side, Shadow B2003/04, were 1-2-0 in their U17 group.
