Cup Season: Four Spokane Sounders Sides Celebrate as Finalists
Thursday, May 9, 2019
It was a weekend full of celebration and heartbreak as numerous Spokane Sounders squads advanced to the championship games of their respective tournaments. Four more sides take a crack at some hardware this weekend in the final edition of State and President’s Cup tournaments for the year.
Five teams on the weekend saw their contests decided by a single goal or shootout with four of them coming in the championship contest. The four teams to finish with a silver medal were B2005 Rave and G2005 Rave in the State Cup and the duo of G2007 Rave and B2007 City Rave in the President’s Cup.
Final Four Part One at Starfire
B2005 Rave – State Cup – Reached the U14 championship game with a 2-1 victory over regional foe Three Rivers Black in the semifinal. They battled Crossfire Premier in the championship only to come up just short in a 3-2 decision.
G2005 Rave – State Cup – In the semifinal of the U14 tournament the ladies took care of business with a 1-0 victory over Eastside Reign Academy 2. The team would celebrate a runners-up finish, however, after a 3-1 defeat against Snohomish United Black A in the championship game.
B2007 City Rave & South/Valley Rave – Presidents Cup – The City Rave boys won a thriller in a rare intra-club head-to-head U12-D2 semifinal contest with the Valley/South side at the Spokane Shadow Polo Grounds Saturday morning. The 6-5 result earned them a trip to Starfire, where they narrowly fell in the final 2-1 to Seattle United Samba C.
G2006 Shale – Presidents Cup – The ladies’ run came to a close in the U13-D2 semifinals in a narrow 1-0 decision against Whatcom Rangers Blue, who netted the winner late in the second half of a defensive stalemate.
G2007 City Rave – Presidents Cup – Their dominant run in U12-D2 continued with a 4-0 victory in the semifinals against FWFC White to reach the final. They would finish runners-up as WPFC took the championship in a 1-0 decision.
Final Four Part Two at Starfire
G2000 Rave – State Cup – The ladies dropped a one-goal decision on the road to GS Surf, who swept the group, to close out group play, but advanced to the Final Four on tiebreakers. They will face Washington Rush A in the U-19/20 semifinals at Starfire.
G2001 Rave – State Cup – The ladies finished the group with a perfect record to enter the Final Four at Starfire as the top seed, getting Kitsap Alliance A as their semifinal opponent in the U18 tournament.
G2003 Rave – State Cup – The ladies finished their U16 group sweep Saturday with a 2-0 victory against Washington Rush, locking up a spot in the Final Four next week at Starfire, where they will face WPFC Black B in the semifinals.
